What are the side effects of the implant?

The implant is a wonderful form of birth control for someone who wants an easy option that doesn’t require daily effort. However, like any birth control, there are some things to know before starting.

First, it requires a small procedure to place and a small procedure to remove (3 years later). This involves a needle and insertion of a numbing medicine, but this is generally the most painful part. The rest of the procedure and having the implant in your arm should not be painful at all.

Second, when it comes to your period, most experience lighter, less painful periods or no period at all! There is a small portion, though, that experiences an increase in menstrual flow. In these cases, the implant can be removed.

Most folks are curious about weight gain. Every hormonal method of birth control carries the risk of slight weight gain. The implant, therefore, can cause a small weight gain after it is first inserted, but weight stabilizes or returns to normal most often.

Lastly, if you have depression, make sure it is well-controlled before getting the implant and chat regularly with your doc about depression symptoms. Some experience a worsening of depression, though this is responsive to medication or therapy changes.
