Beginner’s guide to condoms
Whatever form of sex you are interested in (penis-to-vagina, penis-to-anus, penis-to-mouth), a condom is one of the only ways to prevent the spread of STIs (sexually transmitted infections). But do you know how many kinds of condoms there are?!? Here’s a little shopping guide for you.
First, size. If the condom doesn’t fit correctly, it can tear or fall off and/or cause an overall unpleasant experience...which can cause you to totally hate condoms! But the key to size selection is being realistic. Start by measuring the girth of your penis (take a string, wrap around the erect penis, mark the girth and then use a ruler to measure the string) and the length of your penis (start at the pubic bone at the base of your penis and measure to the tip of the erect penis).
Now to size selection. The most important factor is girth (not length), so select first based on this value. If <4.7 inches go with snug fit, if 4.7-5.1 inches go with regular and if >5.1 inches go with large. Condoms will generally have extra material to roll down the shaft of the penis, but if you buy a condom that is too short (or way too long) you may need to adjust sizes (or brands). (Size guides linked on this page.)
Second, material. If you or your partner have a latex allergy, consider some of the other options! There are many to choose from and it’s not a reason to not use a condom.
Third, texture and taste. Don’t get distracted from the basics of condom selection (size and material) but sometimes a little extra pizazz can make the experience much more enjoyable for both parties.
Fourth, extras. Even though many condoms come with lubrication it’s a good idea to have some extra on hand. Do not use oil-based lubricants on condoms as they can cause tearing. Instead, stick with water- or silicone-based.
