What medications interact with birth control?

There are only a handful of medication interactions to be aware of when you use birth control. It’s important to note that interactions are different based on the type of birth control (because they are different hormones and given by different administration routes).

Mediations that reduce the efficacy of birth control pills are:

• Multiple anti-seizure medicines

• One antibiotic (rifampin)

• One antifungal (Griseofulvin)

• Multiple HIV medicines

Nexplanon (the implant) drug levels can be decreased by:

• Multiple anti-seizure medicines 

• Multiple HIV medicines

Depo (the shot) actually has the least medication interactions. Efficacy can be impacted by the following but it’s use not contraindicated in the USA:

• Multiple anti-seizure medicines

• Rifampin
