What is endometriosis?
The lining of the inside of the uterus is covered by special cells, collectively called the endometrium. Endometriosis is a condition where endometrium is found in places outside of the uterus. Common places include on the ovaries and on the lining of the abdominal cavity.
This is a relatively common condition, though exact numbers are difficult to determine because diagnosis is tricky. The only way to truly know if someone has endometriosis is by very special pictures or surgery. However, endometriosis can cause scarring, intense pain and even fertility issues, so early detection and intervention can improve quality of life.
Because it’s difficult to diagnose, there is a low threshold for “treatment” which is aimed at improving symptoms. Symptoms may be very mild or very severe and painful. They include:
Very painful menstrual cramps
Pain with vaginal penetration
Intense abdominal pain
If you’re concerned about these symptoms, talk with a doctor.
