How do I put a tampon in?

First time using a tampon? Relax! Here’s a little tutorial on how to insert a tampon.

Most tampons come in an applicator (cardboard or plastic device that helps with insertion). There is usually a spot to grab the tampon with your thumb and middle  finger while placing your index finger on the end of the applicator (see ridges in photo). If there is no applicator, ignore this!

Have a seat on the toilet or stand with one leg propped up on the toilet (or a stool). Feel for your vagina with a clean hand and then guide the tampon to the opening. Insert aiming for your lower back. If your tampon has an applicator, insert until your thumb and middle finger have reached your skin, then use your index finger to push in the applicator a little further. If you do not have an applicator you’ll need to insert with a clean finger (usually as far as your finger will go).

Don’t leave in for longer than 8 hours. I also recommend a panty liner in case there are leaks. Lastly, if you struggle with this, it’s okay! Stay tuned for more information on hymen variants.
