Does drinking chlorophyll really help with acne?

You may have seen the TikToks that suggest regularly drinking a chlorophyll liquid supplement will help with acne, but here’s the deal. There’s no evidence to support that.

Chlorophyll is the substance that makes plants green. It’s also very abundant in green leafy vegetables. Eating your veggies has many health benefits, though acne is not regularly cited. Chlorophyll supplements are a chlorophyll derivative that is combined with a mineral to help with absorption into our bodies when digested. These supplements are usually used for GI health and odor control for ostomy pouches.

Why the connection to skin health? I don’t know, but there are some loose and nonspecific connections between what you eat and acne. If someone is replacing a food that worsens acne with chlorophyll supplements, there’s your answer! It’s also possible that increased hydration by drinking these supplements is improving skin health as well.

So…what to do? It’s your call, but I would recommend saving your money and instead eat your green leafy vegetables (spinach and kale are great sources of chlorophyll).
