What does PCOS look like for teenagers?

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a spectrum of symptoms and, especially in teenagers, can be a tricky diagnosis. But here’s what you should know: if you have questions about PCOS for yourself it’s always worth a talk with your doctor.

How is the diagnosis made? Much of it is based on your own symptoms. Here is the rough criteria (for teens):

  • Abnormal period pattern for at least a year

  • Really bad acne (hasn’t improved with treatment)

  • Abnormal body hair OR lab testing that shows high testosterone

Also, it’s absolutely not true that one has to be obese to be diagnosed with PCOS. In fact, about half of teens with PCOS are not obese. So again, if you’re worried, chat with your doc!
