What are your thoughts on labiaplasty?

As a pediatrician, I really don’t have first-hand experience with labiaplasty (a type of surgery that is performed to remove excess labia minora skin), though I have made one or two referrals. What I do know is that it can be done by a gynecologist but under pretty specific conditions. The skin down there is very sensitive and larger labia minora are not a bad thing…unless they cause significant irritation. If your labia minora are larger they may rub on clothing and cause regular discomfort, or they may catch on things and tear, putting you at increased risk for skin infection. Those are generally the conditions under which a doctor will remove some extra tissue. If it’s for cosmetic purposes (meaning that someone just doesn't like the way they look) insurance will likely not cover the cost of labiaplasty. Regardless, if this is something that you would like to learn more about, a gynecologist will be your next step.
