I have a clear-white vaginal discharge between periods. Is this normal?
If this happens between most of your periods and isn't yellow/green, itchy or smelly, it's probably totally normal! There’s something called "physiologic leukorrhea" (or normal white discharge) that happens to most females. Physiologic leukorrhea is caused by a hormone in your body (estrogen) that acts on the walls of your vagina. If the amount of discharge bothers you, try wearing panty liner. Some individuals also report reduction of discharge with birth control (though this would typically not be an indication for starting birth control).
There are other things that can cause abnormal vaginal discharge, like yeast infections or STIs (sexually transmitted infections). If the discharge is itchy, smelly or clumpy, it might be a yeast infection and you should visit your doctor. If the discharge is a funny color or smelly, or if you have pain when you pee, you should see the doctor as it might be an STI. This is a separate discussion, but if you are having sex (penis-vagina or penis-anus) you should see a doctor at least every year for an STI check (or sooner if you are having symptoms).
