What should I do if I think I’m pregnant?
So let’s say you’ve had unprotected sex and missed a period. You can buy pregnancy tests from the drugstore or online. Keep in mind that these tests are most accurate after about 2 weeks have passed since your sexual encounter (or after a missed period). If you take a test too soon you might get a “false negative,” meaning you might actually be pregnant.
If you get a positive result, it’s a good idea to start taking a prenatal vitamin. This is to support your body as some of your energy and nutrients will be sent to the growing fetus. However, it’s best to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to discuss options. Depending on where you live, you may or may not need a parent or guardian to accompany you on this visit. Check out the Guttmacher Institution's website for specifics.
If you’ve had unprotected sex, do not wish to be pregnant and it’s within 72 hours after intercourse, you can check out my post on how emergency contraception works. Thereafter it’s going to be much less effective.
