I almost passed out a couple of times recently after standing up. Is something wrong?

It's good that you didn't pass out. Most importantly, if you ever feel like you are going to pass out (feel dizzy, your vision goes spotty or black), try to sit or lie down right away. It will prevent you from hitting your head!

Passing out (or "syncope") can be very common in teenagers. It usually happens when there is a rush of blood from the head -- called vasovagal syncope. Things that cause this are quickly changing position (going from sitting to standing) and going from a cold area to a warm area (like the shower). You are also more likely to experience passing out if you have low blood volumes. Not drinking enough water (dehydration) can cause low blood volumes, but if you are a young lady with heavy periods you may also have low blood volumes. Make sure you drink so much water that your urine runs clear and talk with your doctor if you have very heavy periods.

Is there something wrong? Based on your symptoms, this was likely nothing to be worried about. Usually a teenager will feel lightheaded, nauseous, blacked-out or blurry vision, cold sweats (meaning you are sweating but your skin is cool) and/or pale skin tone during vasovagal syncope episodes. However, there are some symptoms that NEED to be evaluated by a doctor. They include:

  • Hitting your head after passing out

  • Seizures or uncontrolled shaking movements of your body during or after you pass out

  • Passing out while exercising

  • Chest pain or funny heart beats around the time of passing out

  • Any time you pass out without the vasovagal symptoms (lightheadedness, nausea, vision changes, cold sweats or pale skin tone)

When in doubt, please be seen by a doctor! Otherwise, drink lots of fluids. Your growing body needs it.
