I'm 15 and found a lump in my breast. Could it be cancer?

At your age the chance of breast cancer is incredibly low. If anything, the lump is probably more a sign that you are going through puberty. Breasts and the underlying tissue change a lot during your teenage years, sometimes creating little nodules that come and go. Your breasts might also be tender and look a little lopsided as they grow. This can all be very normal.

There are many different types of mature breast tissue. Some breasts feel soft, some have lumps and some have tight bundles of tissue. Furthermore, your own breasts can feel different depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle (your period). I always encourage females to get to know what their breast tissue feels like by doing a self-breast exam (usually right when your period ends). This can help you get to know your unique breast tissue and to detect in the future if something feels off.

Try checking the lump again after your next period. If it’s still there, or if you’re still super worried right now, it’s absolutely fine to go see your doctor. You should also see the doctor if you have any blood or pus coming out of your nipple or if the skin over the breast lump is different than the surrounding skin (red, rough or bumpy).
