Is it possible to exercise too much?
Yes. It’s called compulsive exercising and is a lot like an addiction.
It’s so difficult to achieve a balance of health and body acceptance. And while we often talk about anorexia and bulimia as the main types of eating disorders, there are plenty more diseases and thought processes that qualify as unhealthy habits and obsessions. It can even be a problem when someone is obsessed with eating “healthy” exclusively, all the time.
How do you know when your level of exercise is a problem? The big-picture answer is: when it interferes with your other activities and relationships and/or the exercise and body image preoccupy your thoughts. Here are some other signs to look out for if you’re concerned about yourself or someone you care for:
Exercising despite injury or illness (not taking a break)
Feeling anxious or guilty when a workout is missed
Eating much less when a workout needs to be missed
Exercising a lot more if a large or unhealthy meal has been consumed
Loss of a period
Stress fractures
Talk with a doctor or an adult if you are looking for help. The National Eating Disorder Association also has a number of great resources for those who are struggling.
