How long does spotting on an IUD last?
Spotting (and changes in menstrual patterns) are very common with initiation of birth control, including IUDs. IUD stands for intrauterine device and is a type of birth control that is placed by a medical provider in the cervix. Hormonal IUDs can stay in place anywhere from 3 to 6 years, and these are the types that generally cause some changes in bleeding patterns. (The other type of IUD is copper and this one doesn’t usually interfere with periods, though it can cause brief increases in bleeding.) Spotting/bleeding between periods on the hormonal IUD usually resolves within 6 months. If it doesn’t, or if the bleeding is too much, see your doctor.
